A fundraising video to help Victoria “Vicko” Alvarez run for Chicago city council (15th Ward)

Producer | Director | Editor

Collaborators: Gene Fojtik (cinematography), Rodrigo De Leon (Sound), Luis Nieves (PA)

CHALLENGE

Help Vicko, a first-time candidate, get her name out to potential like-minded supporters in and out of Chicago, in order to drive grass-roots donations to allow her to fund her campaign.

PROCESS

  • Ran in-depth interviews with Vicko to understand her campaign strategy, identifying her goal to contrast her holistic approach to public safety against her opponent’s punitive actions.

  • Accordingly, wrote a script based on Vicko’s website and her opponent’s Fox News appearances, where he bad-mouthed the ward

  • Embedded myself to Vicko’s door-knocking operation to scout her ward for filming locations while capturing some B-roll

  • Managed logistics and equipment rental, assembled a small team to help with cinematography, and ran a half-day formal shoot with Vicko and her staff.

  • Followed up with some additional informal B-roll capturing with Vicko as she campaigned.

  • Edited the footage, incorporated music from one of Vicko’s collaborators, sound designed and cleaned the sound in post

  • Performed minor animation, graphic, and captioning work.

  • Cut two different time-length versions, each versioned with English and Spanish captions.

RESULT

The campaign raised 50k in the two weeks after releasing the video on their social channels
